About the Ridge

When I was young I saw a pair of emus with their chicks. They weren't in a zoo or the wild. They were on a farm surrounded by fields in the middle of nowhere! It was at that moment I realized I could raise emus on my farm. However my family was already busy figuring out how to raise goats and chickens, so my idea was placed on the back-burner.

Years passed, the farm grew and I grew up with it. One fateful day, my mom happened across an unusual advertisement: emu chicks for sale, less than one hour from home. I contacted the seller, did a bunch of research on emu husbandry, and a few days later I brought home two emu chicks. Now, a year later, I have five emus and an online store selling emu-inspired t-shirts, feathers and more.

My name is Tanis and I have Asperger's Syndrome, which has made it difficult to socialize and communicate with other people. From an early age I was obsessed with dinosaurs and weird animals, but now I'm combining the best of both worlds with my "velociraptor chickens" from down under. They're teaching me it's never too late to pursue your passions and has opened up a world of opportunity for me to make new friends and follow my dreams.
